BRABANTIO, a wealthy senator from Venice, had a beautiful daughter named Desdemona. Many men were interested in marrying her because she was not only virtuous but also had a lot of money. However, among the men who were interested in her and were of the same race and background as her, she didn't find anyone she loved. This noble lady, who valued a person's character more than their looks, did something unique by choosing a black man named Othello as her lover. Her father liked Othello and often had him over to their house.
Desdemona's choice of lover, Othello, was not entirely wrong, even though he was black. This noble Moor had everything that could make him appealing to the most important lady. He was a soldier, a brave one at that. Through his actions in wars against the Turks, he had become a general in the Venetian army, and the state trusted and respected him.
He had been a traveler, and as is common with ladies, Desdemona loved to hear him talk about his adventures. He would start from his earliest memories and describe the battles, sieges, and fights he had been in, the dangers he faced on land and at sea. He'd talk about his close calls, like when he breached a fortress or stood in front of a cannon, and how he was once captured by the enemy and sold into slavery. He also talked about how he behaved as a slave and how he managed to escape. He shared stories of the strange things he had seen in foreign lands, vast wildernesses, and mysterious caves, as well as the savage tribes, cannibals, and even a group of people in Africa with heads beneath their shoulders. Desdemona was so captivated by these tales that she would eagerly listen, even if she had other household chores to attend to.
On one occasion, he took advantage of a moment when Desdemona was in a receptive mood and asked her to request the full story of his life, which she had heard about in bits and pieces. She agreed, and as he recounted his life story, it moved her to tears, especially when he spoke about the hardships he had faced in his youth.
When he finished his story, Desdemona responded with a lot of sighs. She swore it was all incredibly strange and pitiful, in a very moving way. She said she wished she hadn't heard it, yet at the same time, she wished she could find a man like him. She thanked him and suggested that if he had a friend who loved her, he just needed to teach that friend how to tell such stories, and she'd be won over. This hint, delivered with both openness and modesty, and accompanied by charming gestures and blushes, made it clear to Othello that she was interested.
Seizing this opportunity, Othello openly confessed his love for her, and in this golden moment, he secured Desdemona's private consent to marry him.
Othello's skin color and his wealth weren't qualities that made Brabantio, Desdemona's father, likely to accept him as a son-in-law. Brabantio had given his daughter the freedom to choose her own husband, but he expected her to pick a man from the nobility or someone with high prospects, as was the custom among noble Venetian ladies. However, Desdemona went against his expectations and fell in love with Othello, even though he was black. She adored his bravery and character, dedicating her heart and fortune to him. She loved him so deeply that even Othello's skin color, which others might see as a problem, was more valuable to her than the fair skin of the young Venetian noblemen who were courting her.
Their secret marriage didn't stay secret for long and reached the ears of Desdemona's father, Brabantio. He accused Othello before the Senate, claiming that Othello had used spells and witchcraft to make Desdemona marry him without her father's consent, and against the rules of hospitality.
At this time, Venice urgently needed Othello's services because they received news that the Turks were preparing a powerful fleet to capture the island of Cyprus, which was under Venetian control. The state turned to Othello, seeing him as the only suitable person to defend Cyprus against the Turks. So, Othello had to appear before the Senate as both a candidate for an important state position and a person accused of serious crimes that could lead to the death penalty under Venetian law.
Old Brabantio, due to his age and respected position as a senator, was given a patient hearing by the serious Senate. However, he was very angry, and his accusations against Othello were presented with a lot of anger. He provided some evidence and allegations to support his claims. When Othello was asked to defend himself, all he had to do was tell the straightforward story of his love for Desdemona, just as we described earlier. He spoke eloquently but without artifice, recounting the entire story of their courtship with such simple sincerity, which is the mark of truth. The Duke, who was the chief judge, couldn't help but admit that if he had heard such a tale, it would have won his daughter's heart as well. Othello's so-called spells and enchantments turned out to be nothing more than the heartfelt words of a man in love.
Desdemona herself testified to this, appearing in court to express her lifelong duty to her father for her upbringing but also her higher duty to her husband, just as her mother had shown by choosing her father over her own family.
Unable to maintain his case, the old senator called Othello to him and, with great sadness, admitted that he had to give his daughter to him out of necessity. He confessed that if he had the choice, he would have kept her away from Othello. He also mentioned that he was relieved not to have any other children because if he did, Desdemona's behavior might have driven him to be a tyrant and punish them for her leaving.
With the issue of Othello and Desdemona's marriage resolved, Othello, who was accustomed to the challenges of a military life, readily took on the role of managing the war in Cyprus. Desdemona, valuing her husband's honor over her own comfort, agreed to his departure, even though it came with some risk.
As soon as Othello and Desdemona arrived in Cyprus, they learned that a violent storm had scattered the Turkish fleet, meaning the island was safe from an immediate attack. However, a different kind of conflict was about to begin, one that would prove even more dangerous to Othello's innocent wife than foreign enemies.
Among Othello's close friends, none had his trust more completely than Cassio. Michael Cassio was a young and charming soldier from Florence, with a pleasant and amiable personality that women found appealing. He was handsome and eloquent, which could raise concerns of jealousy in an older man like Othello, who had married a young and beautiful woman. However, Othello was a noble and not prone to jealousy or base suspicions. He had actually used Cassio to help him win over Desdemona, often sending Cassio to speak on his behalf, as he recognized his own lack of soft-spoken charm. This was seen as an honorable quality in the brave Moor. It's no surprise that Desdemona trusted and liked Cassio almost as much as she did her husband. Even after Othello and Desdemona were married, their relationship with Cassio remained unchanged. He visited their home and his lively conversations provided a pleasant contrast to Othello's more serious demeanor. Sometimes, people with serious dispositions enjoy the company of those who are more lighthearted as a relief from their own intense nature. Desdemona and Cassio continued to talk and laugh together, just as they did when he was helping Othello court her.
Othello had recently promoted Cassio to the position of lieutenant, which was a position of great trust and the closest to the general. This decision angered Iago, an older officer who believed he deserved the promotion more than Cassio. Iago often made fun of Cassio, saying he was only fit for the company of women and knew very little about the art of war or how to organize an army for battle.
Iago had a deep-seated hatred for both Cassio and Othello. He resented Othello for favoring Cassio and also had an unjust suspicion that Othello had a romantic interest in Iago's wife, Emilia. Using these imagined grievances as his motivation, Iago devised a wicked plan for revenge that would harm Cassio, Othello, and even Desdemona.
Iago was a cunning man who understood human nature well. He knew that, out of all the torments that could torment a person's mind, jealousy was the most unbearable and hurtful. He believed that if he could make Othello jealous of Cassio, it would be the perfect way to seek revenge. He hoped that this plot would lead to the death of either Cassio, Othello, or both, and he didn't care which.
When Othello and Desdemona arrived in Cyprus and heard that the enemy's fleet had been scattered, it was a reason to celebrate. The people of the island indulged in feasting and merriment. Wine flowed freely, and toasts were made to the health of Othello, the black general, and his wife, the beautiful Desdemona.
On that particular night, Cassio was in charge of the guard, and Othello had instructed him to ensure that the soldiers didn't drink too much, to prevent any disturbances that might scare the local people or upset them about the newly arrived troops. It was on this night that Iago began his evil plans.
Under the pretense of loyalty and love for Othello, Iago encouraged Cassio to drink more than he should, even though it's a serious fault for a guard officer. Cassio initially resisted, but Iago, who was skilled at appearing friendly, continued to push him to drink. Cassio had more and more to drink, and he kept praising Desdemona, toasting her multiple times, declaring her to be an exceptional lady. Eventually, all the alcohol clouded his judgment. When a fellow soldier, instigated by Iago, provoked him, swords were drawn, and Montano, a respected officer who tried to break up the fight, got hurt in the process. The commotion began to spread, and Iago, who had set this all in motion, was quick to raise an alarm. He had the castle bell rung as if a serious mutiny, rather than a drunken quarrel, had occurred.
The sound of the alarm woke Othello, who quickly got dressed and arrived at the scene. He asked Cassio about what had happened, but Cassio was too ashamed to respond. Iago, pretending to be reluctant, eventually told Othello what had occurred, making Cassio's role seem less significant than it was while leaving out his own involvement in the matter, which Cassio was too intoxicated to remember. As a result, Othello, who valued discipline greatly, had to demote Cassio from his position as lieutenant.
Iago's first scheme had worked perfectly. He had successfully undermined his rival, removing him from his position. But this unfortunate night's events were to be used for an even greater purpose in the future.
Cassio, who had sobered up after the trouble, regretted his foolish behavior and felt like a complete fool for acting like a beast. He believed he was ruined because he couldn't possibly ask Othello to reinstate him as his lieutenant now, as Othello would just think of him as a drunkard. Cassio was ashamed of himself.
Iago, pretending to take a light-hearted view of the situation, told Cassio that anyone could get drunk now and then and that he should make the best of a bad situation. He suggested that Cassio should approach Lady Desdemona for help, as she had a lot of influence with Othello and was known for her kind and obliging nature. Iago believed that Desdemona would be happy to help and mediate on Cassio's behalf with Othello, and their relationship would become even stronger after this.
Cassio followed Iago's advice and spoke to Desdemona, who was easily convinced to support an honest request. She promised to plead Cassio's case with Othello and said she would rather die than give up on his cause. She acted so earnestly that Othello, who was very angry with Cassio, couldn't refuse her. When he tried to delay his decision and claimed that it was too soon to forgive such a serious offense, Desdemona wouldn't be dissuaded. She insisted that it be resolved the next night, or the morning after, or at the latest, the morning after that. Desdemona also emphasized how remorseful and humbled Cassio was, and she believed that his mistake didn't deserve such a harsh punishment. Othello couldn't say no to her, especially when she pointed out how Cassio had often defended Othello when she had spoken ill of him.
Desdemona assured Othello that this was a small request, and when she had a serious request, she would seek his love once again. Othello couldn't deny her, so he agreed to reinstate Michael Cassio as his lieutenant, asking only that Desdemona leave the timing to him.
One day, Othello and Iago entered a room where Desdemona was just as Cassio, who had been pleading with her for help, was leaving through the opposite door. Iago, who was quite cunning, muttered to himself, "I like not that." Othello didn't pay much attention to these words at the time because he was engrossed in a conversation with Desdemona. However, he would remember them later.
After Desdemona left the room, Iago, seemingly for the sake of discussing his thoughts, asked Othello whether Michael Cassio knew about Othello's love for Desdemona during their courtship. Othello confirmed that Cassio was aware and that Cassio had often acted as an intermediary between them. At this, Iago's expression darkened, as if he had gained some new insight into a dreadful matter, and he exclaimed, "Indeed!" This made Othello recall the words Iago had uttered earlier upon seeing Cassio with Desdemona. He began to sense that there might be some significance to all this because he believed Iago was an honest and just man. What might seem like deceitful tricks in someone else came across as the natural workings of an honest mind in Iago, and Othello thought he must be harboring a matter too important to put into words.
Othello implored Iago to share what he knew and to express his darkest suspicions. Iago, as if showing genuine concern for Othello's peace of mind, hesitated but said that he had some unpleasant thoughts that might have entered his mind, just as any place might be invaded by foul things. Iago further cautioned Othello against letting his curiosity drive him to the brink of madness. He said that people's good names should not be tarnished on the basis of mere suspicions. Iago used this ploy to raise suspicions in Othello, under the guise of warning him against jealousy.
Othello was aware of his wife's beauty, sociable nature, love of feasting, free speech, singing, playing, and dancing skills. He thought these qualities were virtuous if possessed by a virtuous person. He insisted on having proof before he believed his wife was dishonest.
Iago, pretending to be relieved that Othello was slow to suspect his wife, admitted that he had no proof of wrongdoing but suggested that Othello should observe Desdemona's behavior when Cassio was around. He advised Othello not to be overly jealous or overly confident because he claimed to know the nature of Italian women better than Othello did, and in Venice, wives often behaved one way in front of their husbands and another in private. Iago also insinuated that Desdemona had tricked her father when she married Othello, making it seem as if she had used witchcraft. This argument struck a chord with Othello because if she had deceived her father, she might also deceive her husband.
Iago begged for forgiveness for upsetting Othello, but Othello, hiding his true feelings, urged Iago to continue. Iago appeared reluctant but continued, all the while claiming that Cassio was his friend. He reminded Othello how strange it was that Desdemona, who had refused many suitable matches from her own country, had married a Moor, which he thought was unnatural and showed her stubbornness. Iago insinuated that when Desdemona's better judgment returned, she might start comparing Othello with the handsome Italian men of her homeland. He suggested that Othello delay reconciling with Cassio and instead observe how earnestly Desdemona would intercede on Cassio's behalf, as this would reveal a lot. Iago artfully plotted to twist Desdemona's gentle qualities into her own downfall. He first encouraged Cassio to ask for her help, and then he devised schemes to ruin her using that very mediation.
The conversation ended with Iago asking Othello to consider Desdemona innocent until he had more definite proof, and Othello promised to be patient. However, from that moment on, Othello could not find peace of mind. Sleep and all the potions in the world could not restore the sweet rest he had enjoyed just the day before. His work no longer pleased him, and he lost all joy in his military pursuits. His heart, which used to be stirred by the sight of troops, banners, and battles, no longer had that pride and ambition that were a soldier's virtues. His military enthusiasm and former joys deserted him.
At times, Othello believed his wife was honest, and at other times, he doubted her. He vacillated about Iago as well, sometimes thinking him just and at other times not. He wished he had never learned about it, thinking he would not have been worse off if he had not known about Desdemona's love for Cassio. Tormented by these thoughts, he once grabbed Iago by the throat and demanded proof of Desdemona's guilt, threatening to kill him for slandering her. Iago, pretending to be indignant that his honesty was questioned, asked Othello if he had ever seen a handkerchief with strawberries in Desdemona's possession. Othello confirmed he had given her such a handkerchief as his first gift. Iago claimed to have seen Michael Cassio wiping his face with the same handkerchief earlier that day. Othello, believing Iago, vowed to seek swift revenge, beginning with Cassio's death within three days, and he planned to devise a swift means of death for Desdemona.
To a jealous person, even the slightest things can seem like strong evidence. In Othello's case, a handkerchief belonging to his wife, Desdemona, found in Cassio's possession, was enough for him to condemn them both without even investigating how Cassio had acquired it. Desdemona had never given such a gift to Cassio, and she would never have betrayed her husband by giving his presents to another man. Both Cassio and Desdemona were innocent of any wrongdoing against Othello.
However, the wicked Iago, who was always scheming, convinced his wife (a good but weak woman) to steal the handkerchief from Desdemona under the pretense of having it copied but with the actual intent of placing it where Cassio would find it. This would provide Iago with a reason to suggest that it was a gift from Desdemona.
Soon after meeting his wife, Othello pretended to have a headache and asked Desdemona for her handkerchief to use as a compress for his temples. She complied, but he insisted on the specific handkerchief he had given her. Desdemona did not have it with her because, as we mentioned earlier, it had been stolen.
Othello then explained the importance of the handkerchief. He told Desdemona that an Egyptian woman had given it to his mother and that the woman was a witch who could read people's thoughts. She said the handkerchief would make her attractive to Othello, and he would love her. However, if she lost it or gave it away, Othello's love would turn to disgust. His mother had given him the handkerchief before she died and instructed him to give it to his wife when he married. He urged Desdemona to treasure it as much as her eye.
Terrified, Desdemona realized she had lost the handkerchief, and with it, she feared, her husband's love. Othello, seemingly about to do something rash, demanded the handkerchief once more. When she couldn't produce it, she tried to change the subject and divert her husband's thoughts. She mentioned Michael Cassio and praised him as Iago had predicted. Othello, in distress, left the room abruptly, and Desdemona reluctantly began to suspect that her husband was jealous.
Desdemona was puzzled about the reason for Othello's changed behavior. She considered that perhaps he had received troubling news from Venice or was distressed due to state matters, causing him to be less affectionate than before. She understood that men were not always as attentive as they were on their wedding day and reproached herself for suspecting Othello's unkindness.
In their next meeting, Othello accused her more directly of being unfaithful and loving another man, though he didn't name who. He wept, and Desdemona asked him why he was crying. Othello confessed that he could endure various hardships—such as poverty, illness, and disgrace—with strength, but her supposed infidelity had broken his heart. He called her a beautiful yet deceitful weed that appeared lovely but concealed a foul nature. He wished she had never been born. After this encounter, Desdemona was so astonished by her husband's unfounded suspicions that she fell into a deep sleep.
Expecting Othello to join her in bed, she asked her attendant to prepare her bed with the wedding sheets, comparing herself to a child being taught with gentle methods, suggesting that Othello could have gently addressed his concerns. This was the extent of her complaint.
As Desdemona slept, Othello entered the room with the intention of killing her, as he had planned. However, when he saw her sleeping peacefully, he couldn't bring himself to harm her or mar her pure white skin. Instead, he resolved to end her life because he believed she would betray more men, just as she had betrayed him. He kissed her for what he believed would be the last time, finding her kiss so sweet that he kissed her again and wept, but he claimed these were bitter tears.
Desdemona woke up to Othello's kisses, but his strange and frightening behavior alarmed her. He appeared agitated, bit his lower lip, and had a look in his eyes that she recognized as a sign of danger. Othello told her to prepare for death and say her prayers, as he didn't want to harm her soul. Desdemona, who was innocent and at his mercy, pleaded for compassion and asked to know her supposed fault. Othello mentioned Cassio and the handkerchief, accusing Desdemona of giving it to him. Desdemona began defending herself, but Othello abruptly silenced her, smothering her with the bedclothes until she died.
Just at that moment, Cassio, wounded but alive, was brought into the house. Iago had ordered one of his associates to kill Cassio, but the attempt failed, resulting in Cassio being wounded and the assassin killed by Iago to keep the plot a secret. However, letters found on the dead assassin revealed Iago's guilt and Cassio's innocence. Cassio came to Othello to seek forgiveness and inquire about his offense that led Othello to hire Iago to murder him.
This shocking revelation left Othello filled with remorse and despair, as he realized he had become a murderer and that his wife, the innocent Desdemona, had been faithful to him all along. Consumed by grief and realizing the depth of his terrible mistake, Othello fell on his own sword, dying beside his beloved wife.
These tragic events horrified and amazed the witnesses, as Othello had previously enjoyed a good reputation and had been a loving and devoted husband. His actions, influenced by the cunning villainy of Iago, ultimately led to his downfall. Othello's death also stirred up deep sadness, and it was Iago who faced severe punishment, including torture, for his crimes. The state of Venice was informed of the tragic loss of their renowned general.
